Free magazine searches for kids

An improvement in INSPIRE searching for students in grades K-5 is now available
on the INSPIRE website. The new INSPIRE Kids interface is available on the
INSPIRE database/topic search page. The new interface will replace the current
INSPIRE Kids (aka Searchasaurus) in July 2006. Until then both interfaces will
be available.

Click here to access INSPIRE.NET for kids

Improvements in the new interface:

- Based on the Student Research Center interface for easy transition between
interfaces

- Searches are limited to Primary Search, Newspaper Source, EBSCO Animals,
Images, and Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia

- All five databases are searched together in the default search

- Funk & Wagnalls and the Image database can be searched individually

- Search results returned in relevance order

- EBSCO folder allows for printing or emailing multiple articles

- Teachers and librarians can search ERIC and the Professional Development
Collection from within the interface

- Topics can be used to narrow searches or for browsing articles

- Unique INSPIRE Kids branding includes a link to the Kids Links on the INSPIRE
website

Eat and be healthy

With rising medical costs, people are encouraged to do everything
possible to maintain good health. To find information on the nutritious
foods that help maintain the body, see:

http://www.whfoods.com

Put together by the George Mateljan Foundation to promote proper
nutrition and well being, it contains recipes and dietary pointers.
Especially interesting is the list of the "World's Healthiest Foods A-Z"
(see the link under the /Eating Healthy/ tab) which lists a wealth of
information for each food selected.

This site can help dieters, students, or anyone interested in good
nutrition. Have a look today!

Bon appetit from the LII team: Karen, Wendy, Pat, Maria, Jennifer, Charlotte, and Tom.

Safe places in your home

Creating a Safe Room in Your Home
Discussion about creating a so-called "safe" or "panic" room. Homeowners can use such rooms to protect themselves from intruders or from major storms. Topics include location of the room, access, communication when in the room, and secure doors. The article notes that windowless bathrooms and closets usually make the best safe rooms. Bookpage: America's book review

It's free for our Library's patrons and what a great value it is. Bookpage, published monthly, deal's with "Burning Questions," (questions you send to the Bookpage editorial staff about author's your dying to know more about), current bestsellers, upcoming bestsellers and many other features. Here's the website: www.bookpage.com

Family Ties Magazine: a publication for families on the go!

We've been receiving this magazine for a few months and I've finally had a few minutes to sit and look at it. Quite good indeed! The March/April 2006 issue has articles about composting, cooking Easter dinners and even Stain removal tips! You can find it at the Library's front desk! Here's the link www.familytiesmagazine.com

Back again, for now

Due to technical difficulties (three servers died) late last September '05, we were forced to abandon the blog. Hopefully, and after much catching up, future updates will not take quite so long.

Family friendly listening (and reading)

Going on a vacation and need something (aside from DVDs) to keep the kids occupied while in the car/van? I can easily recommend anything from "The Cat Who" series. Read on and drive carefully!

Following is a review from Booklist Magazine (www.ala.org) about one of the latest in "The Cat Who" series. Though the books do deal with murder (fortunately the author doesn't dwell on it) the strength of the series is, as always, the quite intelligent and most intriguiging cats!

The series doesn't dwell on sex, is respectful of those who perish and is pro-animal! Not suggested for younger listeners, but say 8 or 9 year-olds should handle them just fine.

From Booklist

Anyone who has ever exclaimed, "Cats!" with a mixture of affection, frustration, and admiration is bound to fall (or has already fallen) for this venerable series (27 novels young) featuring Koko and Yum Yum, the svelte and savvy Siamese. This time the marvelously mustached Jim Qwilleran, more familiarly known as "Qwill," and his feline friends relax in their converted apple-barn home in Pickax City, Moose County, "400 miles north of everywhere." Frantic activity occurs around them, as Pickax prepares for its sesquicentennial with parades and other festivities. As the richest man around (thanks to an inheritance), Qwill is called upon to lead or partake in many events and write about others in his "Qwill Pen" newspaper column. Meanwhile, a terrible storm threatens the celebration, and the mysterious deaths of a wealthy couple lead to questions about murder. With its familiar characters, cozy plots, and happy endings, this series remains as comforting as a warm cat in your lap on a rainy day. Jenny McLarin
